A Comprehensive Profile

Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, is one of the key institutions of medical education established in Jammu and Kashmir under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for new medical colleges. Despite being relatively young, GMC Anantnag has quickly become both an academic hub and a tertiary healthcare centre for the people of South Kashmir, covering the districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam and Pirpanjal Region.

Foundation and Establishment

2018

GMC Anantnag was formally established with a vision to provide quality medical education and healthcare services to the region.

May 2019

The Letter of Permission (LOP) was granted by the Board of Governors, allowing admission of the first MBBS batch (100 seats) for the academic year 2019-20.

Location and Regional Importance

Strategically located in South Kashmir, GMC Anantnag serves the districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam and the Pirpanjal Region, providing comprehensive healthcare to both urban and rural populations.

Located at Dialgam, Anantnag, a serene and accessible site chosen for its potential to accommodate modern infrastructure and future expansion.

  • MMABM District Hospital, Janglat Mandi - Main tertiary referral and teaching hospital
  • Maternity & Child Care Hospital, Sherbagh - Specialized in maternal and neonatal healthcare

Community Health Centers

  • Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) at Sagam, Kokernag
  • Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) at Brakpora

These centers provide hands-on training for medical students while serving the local community.

MBBS Program

Admission: Through NEET-UG (85% State Quota, 15% All-India Quota)

Role During COVID-19 Pandemic

GMC Anantnag emerged as the healthcare backbone of South Kashmir during the COVID-19 crisis, demonstrating exceptional resilience and commitment to public health.

Diagnostic Leadership

Established one of the first RT-PCR testing labs outside Srinagar, dramatically enhancing diagnostic capacity and reducing turnaround time for test results.

Treatment Center

Converted MMABM Hospital into a major COVID treatment centre with dedicated ICUs and isolation wards while maintaining essential services for other patients.

Innovative Services

Launched tele-consultation services to provide remote healthcare, participated in vaccination drives, and conducted extensive awareness campaigns in the community.
