Established in 1953, Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg Memorial Hospital has evolved into a leading tertiary healthcare institution in South Kashmir. It now serves as the Associated Hospital of Government Medical College, Anantnag.

The hospital has the distinction of catering to a population across eight districts — covering all four districts of South Kashmir and extending to the Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal regions including Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, and Rajouri.
