The Department of Ophthalmology at GMC Anantnag Achives a Huge Milestone; Performs thousands of Key Eye Procedures in recent past Anantnag, 25 November 2025 The Ophthalmology Department of Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has recorded significant achievements, performing 7,728 cataract surgeries and 1,850 intravitreal injections between January 2023 and October 2025. The figures do not include other surgeries such as trauma, lid, glaucoma, squint and retina procedures which in total during last three years have been totalling 1558 procedures. Associate Professor Dr. Rayees Ahmad said the department’s performance aligns with the goals of the National Programme for Control of Blindness and the Ayushman Bharat scheme. He added that the district caters to a large population from Anantnag and neighbouring districts. GMC Anantnag is also the first among the new medical colleges to introduce intravitreal injection services, a major relief for patients who earlier had to travel to Srinagar or outside the region. Head of Department Dr. Mohd Yousuf stated that the department remains committed to providing quality treatment and medical education. He said the department receives a heavy inflow of OPD and IPD patients and is functioning with two permanent faculty members , a consultant on deputation, a senior medical officer and resident staff. Department is running postgraduate courses in ophthalmology with students from across india.He thanked his team for their continuous efforts. He further said that department has almost zero rate of referral other than some rare cases. The department acknowledged the support of Principal Prof. Dr. Ruksana Najeeb for her constant encouragement,upgrading machinery and strengthening services, expressing hope that remaining needs will be addressed soon.

*Department of Radiodiagnosis & Imaging, GMC Anantnag Celebrates World Radiology Day* Anantnag, November 19, 2025 The Department of Radiodiagnosis & Imaging, Government Medical College Anantnag, celebrated World Radiology Day today. The event was held at the Nursing College, Janglat Mandi, Anantnag with great enthusiasm and academic spirit. *Dr. Mir Saiqa Shafi, Head of the Department,* highlighted the significance of the day, commemorating the groundbreaking discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, a milestone that revolutionized modern medicine and laid the foundation for advanced diagnostic imaging. The programme featured a series of insightful academic presentations delivered by *Dr. Atieq, Dr. Suhail Khanday, and Ms. Naheeda Ahmad.* A poster competition was also organized under the supervision of *Dr. Owvass Hamied Dar,* Consultant Radiologist and Incharge of the competition. The winners were: 1. Adeena Ahmad, 3rd Year B.Sc. Radiography 2. Misbah Reyaz, 2nd Year B.Sc. Radiography 3. Muskan, 2nd Year B.Sc. Radiography *Prof. (Dr.) Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal and Dean GMC Anantnag,* *graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.* In her address, she emphasized the crucial role of radiology in patient care and the need for continuous academic advancement. “Radiology forms the backbone of modern diagnostics. I am pleased to see the Department of Radiodiagnosis & Imaging consistently promoting academic excellence, skill development, and innovation. Events like these strengthen the learning environment for our students and ultimately improve patient outcomes,” she remarked. *Dr. Arshed, Medical Superintendent, AH GMC Anantnag; Dr. Naseer Ahmad Choh, Professor, Radiology, SKIMS Soura; and Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir* attended the programme as Guests of Honour. *Mr. Alex Sawhney, Mr. Bilal Ahmad Dar, and Mr. Rouf Ahmad Laigroo* joined as Special Guests. The event was held under the overall guidance of Chairperson Dr. Mir Saiqa Shafi and coordinated by Organizing Secretary Dr. Owvass Hamied Dar. The programme was hosted by *Dr. Younis Sediq and Ms. Naheeda Ahmad,* with active support from *Mr. Majid Ahmad and Mr. Bilal Ahmad.* *The Vote of Thanks was presented by Dr. Atieq-ul-Islam* , who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, delegates, participants, and the media fraternity for making the event a success.

GMC Anantnag Conducts Awareness rally for" One Nation One Health Mission* Anantnag, 07 November 2025 Prof. (Dr.) Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal, Government Medical College Anantnag, flagged off an awareness rally under the Banner of “ One Nation One Health mission "— an initiative of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The event was organized by the Department of Community Medicine, GMC Anantnag and faculty members, consultants, residents, staff and students took part in the really. The “One Nation One Health” initiative emphasizes the deep interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health, advocating a unified and multisectoral approach to address global health challenges. The awareness rally aimed to educate the community about maintaining ecological harmony, preventing diseases, and adopting a holistic perspective toward health and well-being. Medical and nursing students participated enthusiastically in the rally, carrying placards and raising slogans to spread the message of “One Nation one Health mission”. Faculty members and staff of GMC Anantnag, along with the faculty of Government Nursing College Anantnag, also joined the event, reaffirming their commitment to public health promotion and community engagement. Prof. (Dr.) Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal, GMC Anantnag, appreciated the efforts of the Department of Community Medicine for organizing the event and emphasized the importance of collective participation in health awareness activities. She stated that “Creating awareness at the grassroots level is essential for disease prevention and community well-being. The One World, One Health initiative highlights our shared responsibility toward achieving a healthier and more sustainable world.” Dr. Fouzia Nazir, Head, Department of Community Medicine, highlighted that “The health of humans, animals, and the environment are deeply interconnected. Adopting the One Health approach enables us to prevent health threats and build resilient, well-informed communities.” Dr. Rouf Hussain Rather has been designated as the State Nodal Officer for the “ One Health” programme, while Dr. Tajali Shora serves as the College Nodal Officer for GMC Anantnag. Both officers are coordinating efforts to ensure effective implementation of the initiative across institutions and the community. The rally commenced from the college campus and proceeded through nearby areas, drawing wide public attention and appreciation for its message of global health unity, sustainability, and shared responsibility.

GMC Anantnag Launches " New Official Website" Anantnag, 31 October 2025 Principal and Dean Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb Inaugurated the Launch of " New Official Website of GMC Anantnag". The impressive function was held at GMC Anantnag Main campus Dialgam. The function was attended by Chairman IT cell Professor Dr Nazir Wani, members and staff of IT cell, Heads of various Departments, faculty members and staff. Prof Dr Rukhsana Najeeb while dedicating the website to the faculty, staff and general public said that today's event will mark the beginning of a new era in the history of GMC Anantnag as the website will be a comprehensive information bank for easy and quick references.
